This week has been a busy week. The children have been finishing their gifts for their parents, practicing for the Christmas Show and writing letters to Santa. Our number of the day was 5. They have been doing pretty good with forming the number. ,We have been playing Gingerbread Bingo. I may have to play this game more often. The children loved playing it and they learned the numbers 1-8, took turns using the paint daubers, and everyone was a winner at the same time. To help with building their cutting skills, the children did a gingerbread worksheet. After coloring each one, they had to cut them out and glue them in order, largest to smallest. This was a bit of a challenge to get them to cut because it involved turning their paper to cut a square on the dotted line. I found pre-made gingerbread cookies and I had to buy them for the children. I wanted to have them taste a gingerbread cookie since we have been reading more stories about gingerbread. Each student got to decorate their own cookie. Then I made one cookie with just frosting and cut it into small pieces so everyone could taste it. They all said they liked it! I was surprised. I have never cared for the taste of gingerbread. Our Third Grade Buddies helped us write our letters to Santa and then we played a few games of Christmas BINGO! What a good looking group!
Run! Run! As fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man! We read a few gingerbread stories this week. (The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, and The Gingerbread Baby) We made paper gingerbread cookies which are displayed in the hall. We also have been playing a game using foam gingerbread men. The children had to guess which lettered gingerbread man had a sticker on the back to win a sticker. This week we focused on the numbers 3 and 4. The children practiced writing the numbers on the white board and on paper. Then they had to look at a bunch of numbers and dot some paint on the number of the day. They also had to show that number on a ten frame and stick the correct number of stickers on their paper. I finally brought out the Doctor Kit. It has been fun watching them interact with one another and role play as the patient or doctor. I think they had fun shopping at Santa's Workshop.
The Shape Game! This activity will be circulating to each student for homework. We rolled a number-cube, moved our game piece around the board, then put a mark above the shape we landed on. When we reached the end of the game board, we then looked at the graph to see which shape we landed on the most. That shape is the WINNER! I love these kind of games, because the children are not playing to win. No child wins or looses. They are just happy that a shape won. It also teaches shape and number recognition, one to one correspondence, and graphing. This week we focused on the numbers 1 and 2. First, we used our fingers to trace over the number on the dry erase board to erase it. Then we traced the number with a marker. Then we did a number of the day worksheet. They had to trace the number, stick that many stickers in the box, find and dot the number, stamp that many on a ten frame, and color that many objects. On Thursday, we made mini pizzas for snack time. Q-Tip painting is a great way to build our fine motor skills. Our little engineers made ramps for marbles. They love playing with the old cell phones. They were busy taking selfies and photos of each other.
